Unmasking the Factory Representative Myth in China

Here's a little-known secret about international trade in China: when someone says they're representing a factory, there's a good chance they're not telling the whole truth. It might be surprising, but it's something that many newcomers to the industry don't realize.

In China, the trade scene is full of individuals posing as factory representatives without any real ties to the factories they claim to work for. This practice is so common that some bloggers even teach people how to fake being a factory rep.

One blogger, for example, offers tips on how to sound convincing, suggesting you should claim to be from a specific factory, say you have direct access to the technical department and even offer free samples to gain trust.

However, when the client wants to visit the factory, the recommended tactic is to fake an illness or makeup excuses to delay the visit.

It's disheartening but true. If you encounter these so-called representatives, it's best to consider them middlemen rather than direct factory contacts. They might have lots of factory connections, but they typically have no real internal links to the factories themselves.

Understanding this aspect of international trade in China is crucial. Treating these representatives as intermediaries allows you to navigate the market more effectively and avoid potential pitfalls.

Stay informed, always verify credentials, and you'll be better prepared to protect your interests in the complex world of international trade.
